You certainly don't notice them much in Budapest, or even here in Vienna for their trams. Maybe we just did it wrong...Iike many other things transit related

It's interesting because some people want a tram to run down Whyte Ave with overhead wires on catenary poles, much like Valley Line, and seem to be ok with the visual pollution that will create.

Keep the period style but change propulsion to undercarriage + road-embedded LSM (thereby losing the overhead wires).
