Report recommends increased pay for Edmonton police commissioners, cutting city councillors

A report on the "governance crisis" in Edmonton policing recommends removing city councillors from the police commission — as well as increasing pay for those who sit on the civilian oversight board.

If the UCP wants to remove municipal representation from municipal Police oversight and increase their budgets, why won't the Province just take over police budgets entirely?

Knack will have a council made up of a majority of members who support the agenda and priorities he campaigned on and I don't think he needs to have a full council on board with almost everything he advocates for.

Looks like Darrell Friesen and Reed Clarke will bring some business/investment attraction focus to council and I'd like to see Principe put more of her focus and attention to that, too, and get beyond bike lanes this next 4 years. I mean her campaign had 3 main points - I voted against this and this and this. Maybe she can lead the charge to champion something like Salvador did with derelict housing, as an example. Paquette has some good ideas and maybe she can work constructively with him on something.

I think having Morgan in place of Rice is a big win and will also help council operate more effectively and efficiently - but all incumbents should hopefully move in that direction.

Elliott will also bring another perspective to council and unlike Cartmell, I think Knack is much better suited to work well with all members of council and set the tone for respect and collaboration.

All said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Principe leave for a UCP campaign as she attempted last term federally.

Decided to read the CoE voluntary lobbyist registry to see who's on it - Corb Lund is on file from 2021, with the reason being "Coal Mining". I am so very curious.

Corb has been a very outspoken advocate against coal mining on the eastern slopes of the Rockies. Unclear why he would be lobbying the CoE about that, but I suppose the more political support you can garner, the better.
 
Surprised this board mirrors the reddit crowd, I think with this many incumbents coming back in a city with so many issues especially on the business front is not a good thing. Regardless, of who the mayor is.

Well, the result shows you that most Edmontonians liked the direction of the previous Council. But also, where are the issues for businesses? They gave millions to Katz for Ice District 2.0 and approved millions for the pedway to Stationlands, which benefitted Qualico big time.

If you say taxes, well then, how would they lower non-res taxes without increasing them for everyone else?

If you want to say 'cut spending', where would you cut that would actually make a big enough impact on non-res taxes to encourage more businesses to move here and existing ones to expand?

Permitting is actually quite streamlined right now, but there could be a bit more done from the business licensing side, but overall the regulatory side works quite well. If you are complaining about Alberta Building Code requirements when trying to open a new business or change existing operations, talk to the Province, since they are responsible for the NBC AE.

The NBC AE is altogether not subtantively different from the harmonized national Code - wouldn't you want to direct that to the National Research Council, not the GoA?

I agree that the result shows most Edmontonians liked the direction, I did not say otherwise. I said I am surprised that this board is similar to the reddit group. Many businesspeople voiced displeasure with the previous council, I am not making this up, but that clearly did not show in the result. I did not say anything about taxes nor cutting spending. I am stating that I was surprised by the result in relation to what is more likely a 'business' crowd here compared to reddit.
