My SO was in Neuro at the U of A for 6 weeks recently. The Neuro surgery recovery has still not started. the Neuro surgery ward was packed and very outdated. Hell I saw stuff from when I was on the original build. She spent a couple of days in ICU because there were no beds available. Neuro was getting a new Physio dept though. Should be open soon. Thankfully she is at Glenrose now for a very short time and I have to say they could use a major renovation and expansion. The physio and OT dept are out of date and small. And I know they are trying to raise money for a new pool facility. (perfect for aquacise).

A speedy recovery to your SO. You're right. Our hospitals need love (cash) and this south Edmonton hospital is so long overdue. Health care and education you can't skimp out on the way we have for such a wealthy province.

I sincerely hope you don't have to add the Alex ER to your tour. They literally have their beds and equipment tied together with bandages...

Last summer I had an uncle staying in a general med-surg unit at the U of A for a few weeks. I was blown away by how shabby and rundown his room was. WAY worse than any of the rooms I've been in at the RAH, Mis, Cross, or General. I'm used to unit rooms being outdated and in need of maintenance, but this was way worse.

There was some window paint art on the inside of his exterior window. Looked nice until I saw it was dated 2014 and that meant the interior side of the window hadn't been cleaned in a decade.

Ophthalmology Dept heading there next month. But yah visited enough over the years. They really do need that new tower.

As for the U of A, Yah there have been a lot of areas that had upgrades but it still looks well loved. I did notice the daily maintenance was lacking.
The second floor NW wing is getting gutted and rebuilt. Included in that are new windows. Neuro ICU was pretty congested. The new Mobile Nurses work stations (WOW) do take up a lot of room. I helped build that place in the 80s and was there when the Ventilation system was upgraded. But hell a building like that should not be using pneumatic controls anymore. That tells me in is not currently meeting ventilation standards.
As for this issue becoming an election issue I have little doubt it will be on a High priority.

By the way the Old Norwood Hospital Building is being gutted and rebuilt. I noticed new stud wall and windows.

There is also the Emergency department upgrade, Yes we still need a new hospital but this will open some beds. Miz is supposed to be getting a similar treatment from what I was told. If and when Stollery get done that will open up a lot of space at the U.

About 37 years and counting since a new hospital was built in Edmonton which has grown a lot since then and we are still waiting. It will probably be at least 45 years or more before anything happens.
Metro Edmonton was around 800k people 37 years ago. More than doubled in size with no new hospitals.

I hope this becomes a big issue in the next provincial election.
I would hope so too, but Edmonton has been more or less ignored by provincial governments for 40 odd years.
