Edmonton International Airport (EIA/YEG)

Hopefully they will continue to use YEG as a Hub and only offer flights from YYC to us and force them to fill their planes up here just like Westjet has been using YEG since their inception to funnel through their Hub. Except put them on shitty Q400’s and offer over priced flights every hour to YEG

some interesting quotes:

“I think it’s a hell of an exciting time,” said Flair chief executive Stephen Jones in a conference call. Just months after he was hired, Jones set an ambitious target to reach 50 aircraft within five years. Wednesday’s announcement is part of that plan.

“I think what we saw over the summer, when in particular August when things felt a little more free, the demand for travel just surged,” said Jones. As a private company, Flair does not report financial data, but executives say summer loads were in excess of 90%. “These aircraft in this order that are for delivery in the mid-to-late summer of next year and 2023. And so it’s our belief that by that time, the vaccination rates will be such and the pandemic will be under much more control than it has been, and that demand is going to rocket.”

But uncertainty reigns in aviation, with countries adjusting the rules in response to new COVID-19 variant

“We’ll deal with that at the time,” said Jones. “The airline is well practiced dealing with shocks and we’ll manage ourselves accordingly.”

...
“We will be adding depth in terms of expanding the number of frequencies on existing routes,” said Chief Operating Officer Garth Lund. “On top of that, you’ll also see new destinations coming in. And that’ll be in Canada, but also expanding further in the U.S.”

Flair will create more than 1,000 new jobs when the aircraft are all in service, said Jones.

“We’ll be expanding in Toronto next year, we’ve seen very good demand there,” said Lund. He said Flair would also add aircraft to bases in Edmonton and Vancouver.

Yep, despite others' best efforts, Edmonton retains a large portion of its northern and central Alberta/BC destinations, and is a hub for many passengers. With the growth of FLAIR, we'll start seeing drive-up price sensitive traffic from Calgary and other locations. Just so long as FLAIR can survive the onslaught from rent-seeking established players and grumpy ex-executives that don't see the high-growth potential for the airline...
Good point. With business travel being way down the playing field is more level now, so no reason some traffic could not flow to Edmonton for a change, particularly in the price sensitive category.

Having low cost carriers really can break the duopoly business model, which is more focused on what is efficient for them rather than what works for customers.

... here we go again. I realize this is all so political, but we have had COVID in Canada for a long time now already. Its not like travel bans stopped it before and it will not this time either, but as they say insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.

Our current procedures for travel including testing and vaccination requirements are mostly adequate to reduce the risk sufficiently (sorry no way to eliminate it completely).

Hopefully sanity will prevail this time, we can't go on disrupting the travel industry and peoples plans like this every time there is something else scary in the news.
