New seniors facility to re-start development on High Street

An Edmonton developer is counting on a new seniors home to kick-start redevelopment near High Street.

The land just south of the Original Joe’s on 102 Avenue, on the top of the east bank of the Groat Road ravine, has been rezoned multiple times since 2006 but still sits vacant.

The original concept of large, luxury units in a tower didn’t prove popular and couldn’t be built, said Stantec’s Nancy MacDonald, who is helping with a rezoning application going to a public hearing on Monday.

Now the developer, One Properties, has signed with an Ontario-based supportive living provider. They’ve designed a 22-storey tower with a wide, six-storey podium to hold the seniors facility at the base.

Yes, I believe that 'Brinsmead Kennedy' is now defunct -- Brad Kennedy working as 'Kennedy'. Walkman Architects have come up with a superior design for this potential build-out.
