There used to be McDonald's in a prime location in Commerce Place across from Sunterra as you entered the food court. They also closed a Jasper Avenue location in Wihkwentowin while keeping and now renovating the one in Unity Square so it's more than just residential or lack of residential.

Yes, building one or two more residential towers even in the perfect spots will not in itself revitalize downtown. I believe there are four main problem problems: the level of economic activity downtown (not much job growth - we need more corporate offices, although with many people returning to work in the office this will improve some), social disorder and safety issues that discourage some people from going downtown, lack of enough interesting retail to draw people downtown and the last being lack of residential, in part because of downtown not being so desireable because of the other three. There is no one magic wand and we really have to work on all of these if we want to improve things.

Well unfortunately there very little reason to go shopping in the downtown core. If I stay on the south side I can go to either southgate or millwood's town center or South Edmonton Common and have more options than in the downtown area.

Downtown has to continue to grow its residential population that needs retail and services which in turn hopefully can attract more businesses of all sorts for those residents.

One thing that astounds me is the complete absence of on of the biggest restaurant chains in the entire world from the downtown, McDonalds. I'm not a fan and admittedly I am trying to avoid that restaurant for health reasons, but it's amazing there isn't a McDonald's either on Jasper Ave, or in or near Ice District. In every city around the world I've been to there is a McDonald's in the core of the city. What does that say about our downtown core?

That's wild I've literally never thought of that before.

It makes good sense to use some of the current unoccupied retail space for things like art exhibitions. Despite a lot of the retail space being empty, with people returning to the office, it is actually fairly busy during the day and this will also attract more people both to the mall and downtown. So good news all around.

This reminds me of the Banksy event a couple years ago that was an absolute shitshow and I believe it ended up getting cancelled.

Banksy's picture of Winston Churchill sporting a mohawk punk hair cut should be hung in the City Hall rotunda during the exhibition. God Save the King played over the speakers in Churchill Square would attract some people downtown to see wtf is going on.
