Pumpkins are composted and eggnog is in the dairy aisle. That means it’s to add a healthy dose of holiday brightness to combat the long nights. Christmas lights have been installed throughout Littlewood Park, near the former air traffic control tower, making evenings a perfect time to stop by the neighbourhood.

Construction Update

Falling snow marks another seasonal shift, as outdoor construction slows or moves indoors. This year was a busy one in the neighbourhood. In addition to the home builders working on site, crews landscaped and added touches to Littlewood Park. Construction also continued to lay the groundwork for upcoming development, with utility installation and new roads for the next stage of residential development.
As the freezing temperatures settle in, the Blatchford Redevelopment Office is focusing on detailed design for upcoming stages, both on the west side and along the eastern side, including the work servicing the NAIT campus expansion. The City of Edmonton’s LRT team continues its work on the Metro Line expansion, which is expected to be open in 2024/2025.

LRT Update
The new LRT line will have two stations in Blatchford: the NAIT/Blatchford Market Station located near the future town centre and Blatchford Gate to the north. It will be a high-floor style of train, with “urban” LRT design features, including embedded rail in certain roadways, to create a more seamless interface. Once the LRT line opens, direct pedestrian and cycle routes will safely connect the neighbourhood to the rest of the city.

On the east side of the site, work will continue through the winter on the complex to house equipment to power the LRT system. Once complete, this building will feature LED-backlit glass panels and be part of the new NAIT/Blatchford Market plaza.

With recent talks in Glasgow, it’s easy to see climate change as an international problem. But even if global progress is slow, change is happening on local scales.
To see what’s happening in Blatchford, it’s worth checking out a Blatchford TEDx Talk from this summer. Christian Felske, who leads the Blatchford Renewable Energy team, talks about how climate change is a city problem. It's not asking people to fight their surroundings to make "sustainable choices," it's making those surroundings better to begin with.
“If cities are going to thrive, they need to be smarter,” Felske says. “They need to waste less and be strategic about growth. We have to rethink the energy equation in all aspects of our lives."
Blatchford's utility combines two key technologies identified by the International Energy Agency and climate groups. Heat pumps allow Blatchford to tap into an unlimited renewable thermal energy source, while Blatchford’s district energy system moves that energy around and allows buildings to balance their needs.
All this means it’s possible to heat and cool homes without having to burn anything. It’s just one part of Blatchford’s design for climate resilience, which includes higher density housing, higher efficiency standards, and increased mobility options.

These are called transit oriented developments. I don't think they are that uncommon around the world, and they are getting more popular.
 
Indeed and I am well aware they go hand in hand but I continue to wonder why we don't knock off that low-hanging fruit.
 
I dont mind this approach. Transit first ensures new residents don't become car dependent from day 1. Arguably Oliver is not much different from Vancouver's downtown where there is little access to trains for tens of thousands in the west end. Not apples to apples exactly, but similar. BRT on jasper makes more sense at this point with the other LRT lines.

Ideally, we'd extend the LRT tunnel down Jasper to 124 st, from Corona Station, splitting Metro and Capital lines and adding two or three stations (113/14, 119/20, 124/25, for example)

I'd make an argument for making Capital Line "Gorman-Oliver" and Metro Line "Blatchford-Heritage Valley".

I know that this is a pipe dream, but I can't help but wonder how awesome this would be, especially considering that West Oliver is the densest residential area in Alberta (and getting denser by the minute), having it served by the VLW on the north edge, an underground line on the southern edge, the existing + planned bike infrastructure, and the growing infill retail would make it one of Canada's most walkable neighborhoods.
 
I guess for me it's been a rethinking of what we are doing and why.

I think Blatchford will be successful in due time (30yrs) and like that it is moving forward, but why oh why are we not doing more to better connect the most dense and transit ready parts of our city?
