Municipalities with 15,000 residents or more would lose the power to determine their own development timelines under new legislation tabled by the UCP government Monday.

Bill 48, the Red Tape Reduction Implementation Act, aims to speed up approvals, cut regulations and save money for businesses by changing 12 pieces of legislation across eight government ministries.

The hypocrisy of this government complaining that the Federal government overregulates provinces while simultaneously overregulating its own municipalities shouldn't be lost on anyone.
“Bill 20 effectively downgrades the role of municipalities just when partnership is needed more than ever,” Don Iveson said. “Just as the premier has repeatedly called on the federal government to issue Albertans a ‘fair deal’ to drive Canada’s prosperity, municipalities are asking for their ‘fair deal’ to be full partners in supporting economic recovery and growth.

"We only care about a fair deal for Alberta, not for Albertans, silly."
