Find out more about planned improvements to 50 Street traffic
June 12, 2018

The City of Edmonton will hold a public information session to share details and answer questions about the 50 Street Widening and Rail Separation project.

Date: Tuesday, June 26, 2018
Time: 5 - 8 p.m. (drop-in)
Location: The King's University, 9125 50 Street

Planned improvements include widening 50 Street to six lanes between 76 and 90 Avenue and addressing traffic delays related to the current at-grade Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway crossing north of Sherwood Park Freeway.

50 Street provides access to adjacent developing industrial areas and functions as a major north-south commuter and goods movement corridor. The City is currently reviewing and updating previously completed concept plans for the project.

I'm guessing 75 Street/CPR grade separation is at least three years away. The city would probably not work on two railroad bridge projects at once, that close together. Also, I'm guessing that 75 Street commuters need a break from LRT construction.

75 Street is not nearly as bad as some other grade crossings in the city. The reason 50 Street is so bad, is because it’s next to a yard, and trains heading to Calgary build their train in chunks over the crossing. I would say Whitemud ramps at Gateway Blvd, 149 Street north of the Yellowhead, and 99 Street are higher up on my list than 75 Street.

The city estimates the cost of the 50 Street Widening and Railway Grade Separation project will be 41% over budget, up to $145 million from $103 million, due to a major design change requiring an overpass. According to Jason Meliefste, branch manager of infrastructure and delivery, the City of Edmonton has about 275 capital projects underway and the most recent review showed more than 96% were on budget. - Taproot

41% over budget. Lmao.

^^ The shared use path should be a given these days
Agreed 100% that it should be, and yet it's seen by a worryingly large number of people as a "war on cars". But each new path/bike lane normalizes the concept that much more, and so I'm glad that the city is staying the course.
