102 Avenue Bridge Over Groat Road

Troubled 102 Avenue bridge will open faster than expected, but affected businesses aren't cheering yet
A major obstacle to west Edmonton drivers will be removed sooner than expected after the city announced Thursday the troubled 102 Avenue bridge will open by early August.

The new span was supposed to go into operation in late September, a year behind schedule, but the mild winter and spring meant work was able to proceed faster than expected, said Adam Laughlin, deputy city manager of integrated infrastructure services.

He assured local businesses hurt by the lack of traffic that he shared their frustration at the delays, which were caused when three 40-tonne steel girders buckled during installation in March 2015.

102 Avenue bridge to open mid-morning Friday
July 14, 2016

Good weather and hard work means the new 102 Avenue over Groat Road Bridge will open by mid-morning on Friday, July 15, 2016.

By 10 a.m. Friday, one lane in each direction will open to vehicles and pedestrians. Beginning with Friday’s afternoon drive home, there will be two traffic lanes maintained in each direction during peak hours (Monday - Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) with pedestrian access on one side.

Lane reductions will be required, during off-peak hours, over the coming months to complete the finishing work throughout the summer and fall. Finishing work includes installing railings and replacing the concrete median on Groat Road. Multiple weekend and overnight closures of Groat Road and the multi-use trail on the west side of Groat Road will also be necessary in the coming weeks.

The new $32-million bridge features four lanes for traffic with lanes wide enough for ETS buses. It will also feature wider sidewalks and a dedicated bike lane with enhanced barrier protection. The project will be completed by the end of September 2016.

The bridge serves as a major east/west corridor into and out of Edmonton's downtown.

The City of Edmonton thanks the local businesses on 102 Avenue and 124 Street, residents, motorists and trail users for their patience during bridge construction.

Edmonton farmers' market to stay put as bridge re-opens
With the 102 Avenue Bridge set to finally open for traffic Friday, the 124 Street Grand Market will stay exactly where it is for the rest of the summer.

The market moved to 102 Avenue between, 123 and 124 Street, this year because of construction on its usual home of 108 Avenue.

When the bridge opens there will be more traffic to move around the market Thursday nights, but Kirsta Franke, the market’s director, said they can work with it.

“It doesn’t change anything for us. We are still going to remain there with the road closure every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.,” she said.
