    Edmonton Nightlife (past and present)

It actually may be quite challenging to try make it off of the short and sporadic rushes before and after events. Other locations a bit further away probably get more business at other times to balance things out better.

    Tower 101 | 175m | 50s | Regency Developments | DER + Associates

Probably not coincidentally, that is a common Edmonton style theme - ugly on the outside but nice on the inside. Not sure why we often can't make more effort for the other part.

Also because of lack of much if any regular EPS presence in downtown Edmonton, except to respond to incidents, sometimes hours later?

    Tower 101 | 175m | 50s | Regency Developments | DER + Associates

In hindsight, the library built in the 60's was also actually nicer architecturally than the metal blob there now. Aren't things supposed to improve as a city grows? We seem to have gone the other way here with this one.

    Edmonton Companies News & Discussion

The city also needs to focus much more on attracting the type of businesses that can or will be interested in being in the core or more central areas. So much here still seems so focused on industrial development on the fringe or outside of the city. Yes, that has worked in the past when the...

    Commuter & Regional Rail

I feel it could be easier and better to have separate stations basically next to each other and mostly leave the existing LRT station as is, but either way there is lot of space around here.

I go by regularly and can see a good effort has been made to make the space warmer and more welcoming. I feel a bigger problem is it is located on the quieter side of an office building that is not that full. I don't know if a patio would be viable here, but if so it could help.

    Downtown Crime

Yes, EPS is yet another example of the Fermi Paradox with respect to downtown Edmonton. I do feel that some of the problems we have are because things get out of hand when there is no regular police presence.

    U of A real estate

While I feel it would be a big mistake for them to retreat, they certainty don't seem to be able to figure out how to take advantage having this great downtown space or have much interest in doing so. So sadly it it one of the deadest spaces downtown right now. It would make a great space for...

    Connect Centre | 56.3m | 16s | ONE Properties | DIALOG

Unfortunately the problems with downtown are both that there is not a lot of people living nearby and those that do probably do not venture out to get groceries too late because of such problems here and elsewhere.

Yes, if someone bought that hotel and fixed it up that could improve things around this area a lot. I am surprised it hasn't happened yet.

On a somewhat related note, I went by Don'ya around lunch time and it was fairly busy today.

    World Politics

One of the big differences between the US and Canadian systems is there is really no official Leader of the Opposition. This can be both a disadvantage and an advantage. It makes for less cohesiveness but it also gives the opposition to have a broader appeal with various representatives and...

Edmonton City Centre Mall (Renovations) | ?m | 2s | LaSalle Investment Management

Also many people in Edmonton and elsewhere only see what is there now and have a limited imagination. Yes, there is certainly more risk here, but because of that I feel there is also much more potential. Arguably downtown Edmonton has made it through the worst of it over the last few years, so...

Edmonton City Centre Mall (Renovations) | ?m | 2s | LaSalle Investment Management

This is why I feel some of the more ambitious ideas will not happen. I don't see the parkade going anytime soon, although maybe eventually. However, some changes to the exterior on the west side could improve it a lot. The Taproot article posted earlier today about redeveloping it in stages...

Jasper Avenue New Vision / Imagine Jasper Avenue

We are actually fortunate to have wider space for Jasper Ave than many other cities have for their major roads, it gives us the ability to have more/ample room for pedestrians while still having an adequate amount for the road. The congestion from the construction was a bit annoying the times I...

    Municipal Politics

Well HSR has some appeal in Alberta's two biggest cities and perhaps also in other certain other parts of Alberta, but I really can't see it happening here before in central Canada. However, if and when that happens I could see the ball start to roll here very quickly.

    Federal Politics

I suspect at least one or two opposition MP's will suddenly have an urgent need to visit sick relatives or something similar and their leaders will probably be fine with that.

Edmonton City Centre Mall (Renovations) | ?m | 2s | LaSalle Investment Management

Yes, the biggest problem on the west side is the bunker like exterior. Even just making it similar to the east side would be a big improvement, although it is probably time to open it up much more and do something transformative. It will be interesting to see what happens when it is listed and...

    General Architecture & Design Discussion

Cheap, cheap, cheap ... times are tough and they got to find extra money somewhere to give to their friends who run private health care facilities.
