Wow, I didn't even know this was under construction until I saw this thread at the top of the forum. That new rec center is so cool!

And to think it may be ready for some of our medal winning Track team to use. It still amazes me that we so many elite athletes that have stood on international podiums come out of our current facility.

Correct, no ice rink in the new development. I believe the City is still moving forward with shutting down Coronation Arena next door, though (not sure on timing, or if a replacement is planned).

Edit: Coronation Arena is no longer on the City of Edmonton's indoor arenas page, so it's quite possible it's already been closed.

I hope a new rink facility is built in or around the area. One thing this city needs is more ice rinks.

Especially centrally, since lots of the older central arenas (Tipton, Oliver, etc) are also likely to close soon.

Granted it's probably out of date and borderline irrelevant at this point, the last City of Edmonton arena development strategy (2009-2019) had Tipton & South Side to be closed, but replaced with a centrally located twin rink. Though no location was mentioned. Would make sense to me to try to couple this with the Rollie Mills Recereation Centre being built, but it doesn't appear to be in the current plans.

Indeed and I get the economies of scale and all, but it is sad that we are removing walkable, community located rinks.
