Oliver and 124st - Infill Thread

So sad to lose that historic beauty.... probably needs a ton of work as it has been exposed to the elements so far, but nevertheless we need to find a way to save buildings like this.
Was it vacant for awhile?

Was it vacant for awhile?

There was quite an elderly man living in the one half but I think he owned the whole thing and nobody was living in the other side. Just him.

I would see him sweeping his steps or out front the very odd time - and it was a couple of years ago that I saw him last and I walked by there all the time.

I see. When I was at Stop Gap yesterday other customers were talking about a "brick building to be demolished" and this building must be what they were talking about. Sigh

The GOA says:

ReD TaPe ReDuCtIoN!

The GOA in reality:

Sits on property and does nothing.

*Has a literal Ministry of Red Tape Reduction

*Passes the Real Property Governance Act, consolidating all land dispositions from all ministries into Alberta Infrastructure, effectively creating a middle-man for land dispositions.

10/10 move 😍

I think we probably shouldn't jump to conclusions here, given that just a couple months ago the owner was seriously invested in repairing it. They could have discovered previously unknown maintenance needs that would make the building harder to restore, but I can't imagine that anyone would have bought this building without knowing that they were getting into a lengthy restoration. Is anyone familiar with Ecoden, the company listed as the builder?

The sign says UPCOMING DEMOLITION! I don't think we're jumping to conclusions.

I hope you are right and also find it very odd how it went from sounding quite committed to restoring the place to this. It also sounded like they were well aware of the condition of the property, so it does not make sense.

The land is still owned by the province but has been transferred to a different ministry, although I forget which one.
It was transferred to the Alberta Social Housing Corporation in 2017 for affordable housing redevelopment, but they couldn't find a partner and it was withdrawn from sale in 2022. They still own it, and have not made a decision about what to do with the property.
