Edmonton International Airport (EIA/YEG)

We should petition the Minister of Tourism to share concerns about the predatory practices of Swoop aka Westjet with the Minister of Transport.
This would fall on dead ears. Simply put, unless there's price dumping, we cannot interfere in a free competitive market. Also, Transport Canada, which holds the pen on approving the slot allocations, does make an assessment of unfair competition prior to allowing companies to start flights.

I can’t wait until Flair offers more routes out of Canada.

Swoop's plan is to get everyone flying on their route option instead of Flair, forcing Flair to eventually cancel that route due to it being unsustainable, after which Swoop will cancel those routes as well...
Yup! And then all of those US American airport authorities will think YEG is a joke when our carriers start and cancel flights on a whim. If Swoop was serious about proving service, which they are not, then they’d provide service to a destination not offered by Flair

Swoop is really peeving people by this predatory action. Let’s hope 777 is in for the long haul as a lender for Flair and investors dump Westjet share.

WestJet isn't really WestJet anymore, it is Onex.

So you have a private equity company attempting to run out the independent startup.

Due to foreign ownership restrictions, Flair cannot be fully taken over by 777 partners, whereas WestJet has already been taken over by private equity (just so happens to be Canadian headquartered private equity).

Nice to see Flair is making a dent in the Calgary market and expanding its services. Glad to see competition for AC and WS. Won't be long before AC down gauge YYC to a focus city as its connecting services and international flights dry up. You reap what you sow.

"The increased frequencies in Calgary include the following adjustments:

Toronto: Up to 12x weekly
Montreal: Up to 6x weekly
Vancouver: Up to 19x weekly
Kelowna: Up to 4x weekly
Kitchener-Waterloo: Up to 5x weekly
Ottawa: Up to 3x weekly

Thanks to Calgary's positive response to Flair's low fares, the airline is increasing frequencies on many of its popular routes. The summer schedule will also include new service from Vancouver International Airport to Anchorage International Airport, and new routes from Ottawa International Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport, in addition to increased frequencies across the country."

Love it!!!! Watch Swoop add flights out of YYC now! What a complete and utter gong show!
Point to point IS the most profitable airline service model and both AC and WS will soon feel the pain particularly at YYC, YVR and YYZ as they try to feed their "hubs". The more diluted the Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto markets are, the better chance for YEG to obtain nonstop flights.

I don't see this as a major issue. If anything, it opens up another market for EIA focused airline to operate. Air Canada (including its join venture partner United) is playing a dangerous game ceding transborder marketshare to others, but it is their prerogative to do so.
