For many Edmonton millennials with dreams of home ownership, purchasing a single-detached house may prove to be a far-off fantasy. But condominium ownership is a more affordable prospect for many, especially if you're not necessarily looking for roomy living spaces. The trend of micro-living has taken high-density cities like New York by storm, tapping into a pent-up demand for housing in red-hot markets marred by unaffordability and land scarcity. With the soon-to-be-completed Vibe by Carrington Communities adopting the micro-unit doctrine, the in vogue lifestyle has officially arrived in Edmonton.

Designed for an urban-minded clientele looking for adaptable and affordable spaces, the 176-unit project at 10604 116 Street NW features homes ranging in size from 377 to 974 square feet. Instead of expanding outwards, the units extend upwards, with ten-foot-high exposed ceilings defining each living space. What would normally be a solid and intrusive wall is replaced by a slidable partition of frosted glass, allowing the bedrooms to be opened up to the living area. Quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, and durable flooring come standard, but there are also four customized floor plans designed for the athlete, fashionista, artisan, and intellectual in you. Depending on your preference, units may feature built-in storage for sports equipment, an enlarged closet, an expanded kitchen space, or tech-focused elements.

The six-storey concrete construction is joined by a four-storey steel-framed office and retail building, both of which are assuming shape. According to Vibe's marketing, the development has been designed in a "West Coast Architectural Style." Vibe's exterior expression is characterized by a grayscale palette with fluorescent green pops of colour highlighting certain sections of the building. A sky garden will top the structure and provide residents with views of the nearby MacEwan University campus. Vibe will also provide its tenants with an on-site fitness centre and social lounges.
